A month or so ago, in tandem with National Design Week, we showcased Heart and Soul Studio’s Head of Creative Kate Mills in our monthly blog (read it here Elegant Catering Christmas Crackers 2024 – Heart & Soul Studio (heartandsoul.studio))

This month, we are taking a closer look at our Head of Graphics, James (Jamms) Ford who has also been with Heart and Soul Studio for 10 years. With a strong sense of branding, Jamms is a driving force behind all the ‘new’ at Heart and Soul Studio. He has been instrumental in the recent reimagining of Foxy as well as being the creative brain behind many of our games.

James is from Poole, went to Poole Grammar School and then onto Brockenhurst College where he studied Art, Photography & Graphic Design at A Level.

When James graduated, he then went into hospitality as a barman and waiter. During quiet periods behind the bar, he would sketch portraits of the punters on order pads. One day he got caught, and the subject of the drawing asked to see the portrait. When Jamms showed it to him, he was really impressed with the likeness. The chap then explained he was the Head of Graphics at AUB (Arts University Bournemouth) and told Jamms he should quit bar work and pursue a more creative outlet. So he did!

Jamms started a foundation course in 2010 at AUB, then in 2011 went on to do his degree in graphic design, while also working at a web design and marketing firm.

In 2014 towards the end of his last year at university, a friend (Kate, our Head of Creative at Heart and Soul Studio) suggested that the cracker company she had recently started working at were in need of a graphic designer. Jamms got in touch, attended an interview with Kim, and here we are 10 years later!

James says “My favourite products have been the ones that are a little outside the expected. The first significant product development challenge for me at H&S was for Fortnum & Mason in 2015 when they wanted a six person cracker developed for the following Christmas, it sounded simple enough before I started!”

Since then, the Jamms and Kate have led the creative team to develop several weird and wonderful creations that have pushed the boundaries of what a Christmas cracker can be. These include a shark cracker, a gift box in the shape of a Christmas pudding, working on Heart and Soul Studio bespoke customer design requests as well as collaborating with existing brands.
