The path of creativity – 5 years with Richey, our resident Graphic Designer

From the sandy shores of the Isle of Wight to the bustling streets of Bournemouth, the path of creativity led Richey, our resident Graphic Designer, on a journey of self-discovery, where they now commemorate their 5th anniversary working at Heart & Soul Studio.

Born into a lineage of hairdressers, Richey initially embarked on a career in hairdressing, studying between the Isle of Wight College and as a Junior Stylist at former hair salon, Crops & Bobbers, honing their skills in advanced colouring by working with other renowned brands such as Wella, Goldwell, Redken and Tigi. But a burning desire for further creative expression led them back into education, studying an array of A Levels, consisting of media studies, photography, art and of course graphic design, at the Isle of Wight 6th form, before later moving to Bournemouth to study at the Arts University Bournemouth.

Over four years of studying, including an art foundation degree and a degree in Illustration, Richey showcased their versatility, from writing and illustrating children’s books to animation and building video games and more. It was during this time that the seeds of their future career were planted, as they delved further into the realms of photography, graphics, and printmaking.

Following graduation and a transformative European adventure and after taking 6 months off, Richey found themselves drawn to the creative world of Heart & Soul Studio, whilst it was still formerly known as Celebration Crackers. Fresh out of University, Richey joined on a part-time basis initially, whilst transitioning from educational to professional practices, quickly realising this is where they wanted to be full-time.

Fast forward to 5 years later and throughout their tenure, Richey has worked alongside iconic brands such as Fortnum & Mason, Harrods, John Lewis, Dobbies, TKMaxx, British Red Cross and so many more. Some of their achievements are listed as follows:

“As the go-to designer for the company’s annual brochure, I work towards every aspect of its creation, from initial concept to product design and packaging, then photography and brochure layout, showcasing the multifaceted skillset I have built over the years. It’s a huge undertaking, I live and breathe the brochure, we never stop talking about the brochures, past, present and future and I am proud that since I started, from a design perspective, it has become my baby.

As previously mentioned, the collaborations with Fortnum & Mason and Harrods have spanned across my 5 years working, these esteemed UK brands, renowned for their stature and influence, have consistently been a joy for me to work with. With each passing year, my dedication remains unwavering, and the quality of our products continues to shine. I’ve developed a deep affinity for both brands and seeing products I’ve worked on, proudly displayed in their stores fills me with an immense sense of pride.

When I first shared with my family and friends that I’d been offered my dream role working for a company known for crafting Christmas Crackers, their curiosity was piqued. Aside from the inevitable question about whether I’d be writing the notorious jokes nestled inside, they wondered what would occupy my time beyond the festive season. I quickly learned that Christmas Crackers are a year-round endeavour, requiring meticulous attention to detail and an array of components that never cease to amaze me. We have rebranded and expanded throughout my time working for the company and whilst we are still the experts on Christmas Crackers, our latest endeavours in tabletop games, gifting and tablescaping, hold a new realm of boundless potential for growth and innovation, as the company continues to expand its reach and diversify its offering.

I feel my greatest achievement working for the company is not necessarily the big brands that I’ve worked with or what I bring to the company, but instead, what the company brings to me, and that is the culture of collaboration and creativity that I am part of, within the Heart & Soul Studio Creative team. We work seamlessly together and have all come from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, so each of us has a unique point of view, making us quite the team. They have all played a pivotal role in shaping who I am as a person and as a designer today and together we have brought countless projects to fruition. I am proud to be a part of a team of people who care so much about the products we make and thankful to the company who have continued to provide us all with so many incredible opportunities and the support to do the jobs we love to do.”

As we celebrate Richey’s 5th work anniversary, we also celebrate the journey of Heart & Soul Studio, a journey marked by resilience, evolution and a relentless pursuit of excellence. We are immensely proud to have Richey as part of our team, and we look forward to many more years of growth, innovation, and success together.
